Where do UK authors get an ISBN?
UK-based publishers, including self-publishing authors, buy ISBNs from the Nielsen UK ISBN Agency, the official ISBN agency for the UK and Ireland. ISBNs sold by third parties in other countries are registered to that country's agency and may list someone else as the publisher.
How much does an ISBN cost in the UK?
At the time of writing, the Nielsen UK ISBN Store sells a single ISBN for £93 and a block of ten for £174. Prices change, so check Nielsen's store before buying. Because each format needs its own ISBN, a block of ten is usually better value.
Do I need an ISBN to publish on Amazon.co.uk?
Not always. Kindle ebooks do not need an ISBN because Amazon assigns its own identifier (an ASIN). For paperbacks and hardbacks, Amazon KDP can give you a free ISBN, or you can use your own.
Should I use the free KDP ISBN or my own?
The free KDP ISBN costs nothing but lists "Independently published" as the imprint and can only be used for that edition on KDP. Your own Nielsen ISBN lists you or your imprint as the publisher and can be used with any printer or distributor, which matters if you want UK bookshops and libraries to order your book.
Do paperback, hardback and ebook editions need separate ISBNs?
Yes. Each format and each new edition needs its own ISBN. A minor correction of typos does not need a new ISBN, but a substantially revised edition does.
Does an ISBN protect my copyright?
No. An ISBN identifies an edition of your book for the book trade. Copyright in the UK is automatic and separate. See our guide to copyright for UK authors.
